What is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD or RDN)
Please note there are scores of people offering nutritional advice out there, many of whom call themselves nutritionists. This is confusing to the general public because there is no legal regulation on the title nutritionist. Some people may just have an interest in nutrition, others may have taken an online course.
Registered dietitians/nutritionists however have to take extensive pre-requisite courses and training. It requires a minimum of a masters degree, plus multiple courses in basic sciences, physiology and metabolism, as well as nutrition courses. After educational degrees are obtained a 6-12 month training program (internship) is required where the candidate works with patients directly in a healthcare setting. This is followed by passing of a national standardized test. About half of Registered Dietitians/Nutritionists have a Master Degree or higher.
Do all Registered Dietitians do OB and Pediatrics?
No - just like doctors, many registered dietitians specialize in different areas! We all have the same general training in basic adult nutrition, but in the training programs obstetric and pediatric nutrition training is limited and comes in practice. So its very important if you wanted to find someone who works in this area to find someone who practices in it regularly and has specialized training in that area
